Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Actuators
Learn the answers to some of the most common questions about electric valve actuation.
Electric actuators are devices that use an electric motor to control the movement of a valve. They convert electrical energy into mechanical energy to operate the valve.
The actuator receives a control signal from a control system. Based on the received signal, the actuator's electric motor then drives a mechanical component—such as a gear, screw or other mechanism—to adjust the position of the valve it's installed on. As the motor rotates, it converts electrical energy into mechanical force to move the valve.
There are five key things to know when selecting an electric actuator:
1. What type of valve will it be installed on: multi-turn, quarter-turn or linear?
2. What type of service is required: on/off, modulating or control?
3. Is fail-safe needed?
4. What torque or thrust range is needed?
5. What actuator style is preferred: non-intrusive or conventional?
